Mainz Cathedral

Of course there was a cathedral.....

Mainz Market Square

This is the market square where we ate lunch in an outside cafe. It was beautiful weather and we enjoyed the lunch. On the far left you can see a stone column called the Heunen column. (Giant's column) It was suppose to be for the Cathedral in 1000 ad but for some reason unknown, it was never used. There are bronze figures an dinscriptions at the base illustrating important events in Mainz history. This is the oldest Renaissance well in Germany. 1526 It was to commenmorate the victory of an Emperor and the end of the Peasant's War.

Yesterday, some friends and I took a trip to Mainz. It's only about an hour from our house. We visited the Gutenburg Musuem (Photo above). The musuem itself was an old Roman Emperor's house built in 1653. Reportedly, Goethe, Mozart and Voltaire all stayed there. It is most famous for housing the first monument to Gutenburg in 1827. Gutenburg was the inventor of the printing press and his first printing was 200 editions of the Bible. Only 46 are left.

Today it is the "World Museum of Printing".
This is the Gutenberg workshop that had a demonstration of the printing of a Bible page while we were there. The museum has 2 copies of the Bible in a vault and it is in three volumes. They were printed in 1452 -1455. Very old and still in great condition. They had a short film on Gutenburg and lots of printing presses!

Rose Bushes

Wanted to share the rose bushes and lavender that is in our front yard in Rodenbach, Germany. They were all in bloom when we came back from the States. Beautiful!

Molly's Graduation Party

My niece, Molly, graduated from High School and we were able to attend the festivities as Don and I flew back to Dayton, Ohio to visit friends and family for a few weeks.
